Posted on2023-05-29 607

Prefinished parquet is an increasingly popular solution for those looking for a high quality, easy to install wooden floor.

Among the various types of prefinished parquet, we find those with two or three layers.
We asked for the advice of our architects to analyze together the characteristics, advantages and differences between pre-finished two-layer and three-layer parquet. We will help you choose the floor that best suits your needs.

Prefinished parquet: what it is and why choose it

Prefinished parquet is a type of wooden floor that is delivered already treated and ready to be installed, without the need for further interventions such as sanding or varnishing. This feature makes it particularly appreciated for its practicality and speed of installation, as well as for the quality and resistance guaranteed over time.

Advantages of prefinished parquet

  • Practicality: prefinished parquet is ready for use and requires no further treatment after installation.
  • Time saving: the laying of prefinished parquet is faster than with traditional wooden floors, reducing waiting times and the inconvenience associated with the work.
  • Durability: The factory-applied protective finish ensures greater resistance to scratches, wear and humidity, ensuring a long life for the floor.
  • Maintenance: prefinished parquet is easy to clean and requires minimal maintenance.

Prefinished parquet can be two or three layers.
They have various characteristics that differentiate them from each other and which will be useful for you to choose the wood that best suits your furnishing needs.

Prefinished two-layer parquet: features and benefits

Two-layer pre-finished parquet consists of a wooden support, usually fir or birch, onto which a layer of noble wood, i.e. the visible part of the floor, is glued.
Two-layer parquet usually has an overall thickness between 10 and 20mm to which the top layer can be added, which varies from 2.5 to 4mm. It is a type of "firm" parquet because the fir or birch wood support contributes to the stability of the floor, reducing the risk of deformation and movement of the wood.
Two-layer parquet is well suited to temperature-controlled underfloor heating systems, thanks to its structure and adequate thicknesses. Two-layer parquet offers a good balance between quality and price, making it more affordable than solid or three-layer parquet.

Advantages of two-layer parquet

  • Ease of installation: two-layer parquet can be installed both with the floating installation technique, which involves the use of a special substrate, and with glued installation, which guarantees greater stability and durability over time.
  • Versatility: thanks to the variety of essences and finishes available, two-layer parquet adapts to different furnishing styles and environments.

Three-layer prefinished parquet: features and benefits

The three-layer prefinished parquet is composed of an upper layer of noble wood, a central core in materials such as fir and a lower part in cut-out fir or other materials such as ash, called counterbalancing.
Three-layer parquet has an overall thickness similar to that of two-layer parquet, but with a top layer that is usually thinner and can vary from 2.5 to 3.5mm. The three-layer structure guarantees greater stability and resistance to deformation compared to two-layer parquet, thanks to the counterbalancing which precisely balances the movement of the wood.
Three-layer parquet is also suitable for underfloor heating systems, thanks to its structure and adequate thicknesses. Three-layer floors are usually available in larger sizes than two-layer floors, offering a greater variety of aesthetic options.

Advantages of three-layer parquet

  • Resistance: three-layer parquet offers greater resistance to changes in humidity and temperature, reducing the risk of warping and movement of the wood.
  • Ease of installation: like two-layer parquet, three-layer parquet can be installed with both floating and glued installation, depending on needs and preferences.
